There is a flight ban for passenger traffic from the UK to Sweden. Despite this, a British Airways plane with 33 passengers landed in Arlanda on Saturday.

Intensive days off prevail at the Swedish Transport Agency.

Following the breach of the flight ban by British Airways, all UK aircraft are being screened 24 hours a day.

– It is not manageable over time to do this, says press manager Mikael Andersson.

When about 30 people from London arrived in Arlanda on Saturday, British Airways broke the flight ban for UK passenger jets.

The ban was introduced on December 21 due to a newly discovered coronavirus mutation and applies until the turn of the year.

At the same time, there is a ban on entry to Sweden from both the UK and Denmark, with the exception of Swedish citizens.

This caused a misunderstanding at British Airways, according to the Swedish Transport Agency.

– It was thought okay to take Swedish citizens home by plane. But the flight stoppage is absolute, which means the flight was not good, says Mikael Andersson, press manager for the Swedish Transport Agency.

Review travel plans

Saturday’s incident has prompted the Swedish Transport Agency to examine all flights from the UK to Sweden. In practice, what is reviewed is the flight itinerary, a plan that is presented to air traffic control three hours before departure.

Here you will find information on the type of flight and if there are passengers on board.

– It is a 24 hour job, as the flights run 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We regularly receive new information on new roadmaps, responds Mikael Andersson.

Violations of the flight ban occur “very rarely,” according to Mikael Andersson. It is also unusual to review travel plans.

“I work 24 hours”

The Swedish Transport Agency will review the travel plans during the expected time of the flight stop, that is, until the turn of the year. If it expands, a new decision can be made, but time-consuming work is not manageable over time, emphasizes Mikael Andersson.

– This is a temporary measure at this time to secure more due to what happened. We have an extreme situation in the form of a pandemic and it can lead to misunderstandings.
