West Bromwich got their first point with Sam Allardyce leading the way. It came out against Liverpool itself, after Semi Ajayi’s last draw.
Despite an away cross against Manchester City, West Bromwich Albion gave way to Slaven Bilic in early December. Successor Sam Allardyce got off to a rocky start to his tenure when the team clearly lost at home to Aston Villa before Christmas.
But today his team will probably leave Anfield in a good mood. West Bromwich, second classified, managed to win and get a draw against the current champion Liverpool.
At twelve minutes, Senegalese Sadio Mané received the ball with his chest and launched the 1-0 volley for the locals. After that, many hoped that the home side could trudge towards a comfortable victory, but Liverpool failed to score any more goals despite great ball possession.
The home crowd breathed a sigh of relief when Semi Ajayi couldn’t get the ball into the net after his show of skill down the left in the 82nd minute of the game.
“An incredible rescue”
West Bromwich’s extremely defensive playing idea was something Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp did not appreciate.
– I don’t think anyone can expect a team to play like West Brom did in the first half, like 6-4-0 or whatever. I think we did well.
– In the second half we did not continue in the same way, they got some counterattacks and too many corners. It was our fault and so we got one point instead of three, Klopp said on the Sky Sports broadcast.
WBA goalkeeper Sam Johnstone just needed to make one save in the match. The home crowd was unimpressed by Roberto Firmino’s graceful play by Roberto Firmino after 89 minutes.
– It was an incredible rescue. That he only needs to make a stop when we as the last team meet the league leaders shows that we did our job, Sam Allardyce told the BBC.
Liverpool leads the Premier League with 32 points and has three points less than second-placed Everton.
Sam Johnstone unleashed a deflected effort from the right that the visiting goalkeeper did well to deflect the ball.
