SMHI is now warning of the lightning strike that left its claws icy on much of Sweden’s roads, at the same time that many commute home after the Christmas weekend.
– You have to be very careful, especially considering the pressure situation on medical care, says Tobias Ahlén from the police in the Mitt Region.

Snowfall turning to rain has caused slippery roads in large areas of Sweden. On the Swedish Transport Administration map, the main roads initially glow yellow across Sweden north of Örebro, a sign of risk of slippery road conditions. Several roads in northern Sweden are lit in red, the highest warning level.
SMHI has issued a class 1 warning for slippery roads along the Norrland coast in particular, but also in the interior of Gävleborg, Hälsingland and Västernorrland.
Even in the rest of Sweden, there are reasons to be especially careful on the roads.
– In Norrland, heavy snowfall is expected in combination with strong winds, in Dalarna and Värmland there is a risk of slippery local roads and in Götaland it can also be difficult at night, says Alexandra Ohlsson, meteorologist at SMHI.

Ambulance skidded into the ditch
There have already been several road accidents across the country due to slipping.
At Lycksele, an ambulance with a patient on board slid into the ditch from the slippery road overnight around Sunday. However, everything ended well for both the driver and the patient.
In Sandviken, a motorist collided directly with the wall of a house after the driver was struck by a wire. The driver had to cope without hospital care, but Tobias Ahlén of the central region police is now urging everyone to drive more carefully.
– We have had two other accidents in which people grabbed a cable and knocked over many poles and play fences. It is slippery and today is a day of travel where many return home on E4 after the Christmas celebrations. With the Gävleborg region heading towards a catastrophic health care situation due to the pandemic, it is very important, being out and driving now also means risk, he says.
There have also been several road accidents in Dalarna and Värmland due to slipping. Two accidents in Filipstad, where at least one person was taken to hospital, and one accident in Lima.
– It is difficult on the roads, in the north of Dalarna it rains wet snow at the same time as it blows and in Värmland it rains on cold roads, says Christina Hallin in the Bergslagen police region.
“Very strong winds”
Precisely the wind, which will be strongest in southern Sweden, in Götaland and eastern Svealand, SMHI also raises a warning finger.
– There will be strong village winds that will be felt and if you drive over a bridge, for example, you must be vigilant. On the west coast, there can be strong strong winds, up to 18-21 meters per second, says meteorologist Ohlsson.
