When the neck protection requirement disappeared, several in the Junior Crowns chose to skip the protective gear at the JVM premiere against the Czech Republic.
Skellefteå club manager Pea Israelsson reaction to that?
– I think it’s a shame, says Israelsson to Sportbladet.
At SHL, the rules are clear. The neck protection must be on, otherwise there will be a fine.
In JVM ice hockey, however, there are no fines or lawsuits, which in turn meant that several Junior Crowns players raced in the premiere against the Czech Republic without protection on.
– We only follow the rules that have been established. In Sweden they are very strict and then it is important to respect that and I fully understand that, said team captain Philip Broberg regarding protections after last night’s game.
However, the director of Broberg’s club in Skellefteå, Pea Israelsson, does not think it is a question of interpreting the rule books.
– It’s just that the boys put it on. They’re role models as Swedish hockey players, so there’s no reason to make an exception, Israelsson says clearly when Sportbladet calls him on Sunday.

“Send dual signals”
One of the players who did not wear neck protection was previously cited by Philip Broberg. Also his Skellefteå teammate Albin Sundsvik.
Will you talk to the players at the club about this?
– It is the Swedish hockey association that is authorized to direct that. It’s not me who calls Broberg and asks him to put on the neck protection, says Israelsson, continuing:
– Send double signals. You wear neck protectors here at home but not there. I think it’s a shame.

“Your responsibility”
Speaking of double signals, not all SHL managers share Israelsson’s opinion.
“They don’t break any rules, even the players themselves. Your responsibility, “writes Frölunda CEO Fredrik Sjöström in a text message to Sportbladet.
The competition director of the Swedish Ice Hockey Association, Olof Östblom, says the following about the neck protection problem that arose after the JVM premiere:
– We are constantly in contact with team management on site in Edmonton and will address the issue. It is a responsibility we have towards your employers at SHL and HA.
Can Sif ask for protection?
– It has worked very well with Tre Kronor on both Karjala and Channel when we explained the situation. It should be the same situation here, says Östblom.
