Avalanche in Sälen: mountain rescue in progress

[ad_1]

Just before 10 o’clock, Sälen staff alerted that an avalanche had passed on the Väggen ski slope in Hundfjället.

Later it turned out that it was two avalanches. The mass of snow was triggered when two people ran off the piste in the area. Both avalanches were between 10 and 15 meters wide, but one was 30 meters and the other 100 meters.

Police write that they have been in contact with people who have skied in connection with the avalanches and, according to them, no person should be missing or injured.

According to the police, there are a lot of people on the slopes of Sälen, at the same time it has been snowing and blowing in the area.

– There has been a lot of snow in a relatively short time, so there is a risk of avalanches, says Christina Hallin.

The call: stay away

Shortly before 12 noon, the police have left the scene, but mountain rescuers remain and search the area with dogs to ensure that no one is under the masses of snow.

The police also have a warning for everyone on the scene in Sälen:

– In the current situation, it is very appropriate to stay away from the area next to the wall. It could be an avalanche again, says Christina Hallin at 11 o’clock.

Petra Hallebrant is a communications manager for Skistar, which operates the facility in Sälen. She says the hill wall was cordoned off.

– We haven’t had all the slopes open this early in the season, she says.

Avalanche risk at various locations

Higher up in the country, snowfall has also posed problems. Västerbottens-Kuriren reports that there is now a “significant avalanche hazard” in both Västra Vindelfjällen and Södra Lapplandsfjällen.
