On Christmas Eve morning, Elisha Tennant in Edmonton, Canada, found a letter marked “Secret Santa” on her door. Inside was an encouraging and hopeful message to get through these difficult times and a gift card from the department store chain Walmart worth 250 Canadian dollars, just over 1,600 kroner.

“It was very heartwarming and moving that someone did that,” he told CBC News.

But she was not the only one in the neighborhood who received such a Christmas gift. About 400 similar letters with gift cards were distributed on Christmas Eve.

For Tennant and his family, the gift made a huge difference, especially since he lost his job during the pandemic.

– I mean, it’s a month’s purchase for us, he says.

The message that came with the gift card ended with a request from the anonymous donor.

“Don’t you need this? Please pass the baton, because that’s how hope spreads.”
