Malmö Police Call For Help After Latest Tree Data Attack

During Christmas Day, Kvällsposten was able to report that several trees in Malmö had suffered serious damage. Up to 27 trees, in Gamla Kyrkogården alone, had cut large parts of the bark, probably with the help of a knife or ax.

The latest damage is far from an isolated incident. As early as November, the real estate office and the street discovered that several trees in Pildamms, Kungs and Slottsparken had been attacked by a tree lurker.

According to the police, about 10 police reports of tree sabotage were received in December alone. Low count, there are about 80 trees that were damaged.

– This is something we need to analyze further and will follow. We are working to create a uniform routine when these cases arrive at the command center, just like when we had broken glass in the playgrounds, says Andy Roberts, area manager for the local Malmö Norr police.

To be successful in finding the tree hater, the police will, among other things, try to identify criminal patterns and approaches. The police will also do trace analysis when trees are damaged.

– If he arrives in the near future, we will send a patrol there that will inspect the area and secure the tracks. But it’s very difficult, it’s like when we had someone walking around and scratching cars, says Andy Roberts.

– He slowed down when we came out with questions, and when we arrested a man, we couldn’t link him to all the previous car repairs. But in this case, our call to the public is to call 112 if you see anything. The absolute best evidence is the witnesses, if you have the opportunity, you can photograph and film. But since the person in question may have both a knife and an ax, you should not intervene yourself.

Mattias Thelander, a landscape engineer at the Malmö street and real estate office, had previously told SVT Nyheter that replanting a tree costs a little over SEK 20,000.

The roughly 80 trees damaged in Malmö during December are estimated to be worth just over four million crowns, says Andy Roberts.

– It is completely incomprehensible to me that you can walk and damage trees in this way. There is no minor damage to some of the trees and some cannot be saved. What do you get when you damage a tree? I’m not a psychologist, but that is hard for me to understand, he says.

If the tree lurker is found and arrested, there may be more crimes than just vandalism. This is because the person uses some type of cut, probably a knife or an ax, to carve the bark of the trees.

– If you carry a knife or an ax in a public place, there will be talk of breaking the knife law. That is why it is important for us to go out to the places and secure the tracks. For example, we need to be able to tie an ax to several different trees, says Andy Roberts.

Have you received any comments so far?

– No, we don’t have that.
