A person living in Sörmland has been tested and found to carry the new variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Tracing of the infection was started immediately and the risk of spreading the infection due to the case is considered very low.

– Infection control Sörmland has contacted the person concerned. The person in question has acted completely in accordance with the recommendations even before the symptoms. The person in question does not need hospital care and follows instructions not to spread the infection, says Signar Mäkitalo, an infection control doctor in Sörmland.

The person who tested positive for the virus traveled to Sörmland from the UK for a visit over Christmas.

The UK has recently announced a new variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The new variant may be more contagious, but there is no evidence that it causes a more serious illness.

On December 21, the government decided to ban entry from the UK due to the spread of the infection and new variants of the coronavirus that have been reported from there.

The Swedish Public Health Agency has decided to urge visitors to stay home for at least seven days after arriving in Sweden and to avoid contact with other people as much as possible. The invitation applies to all participants who have stayed in the UK since 12 December.
