The king’s call to the people in his Christmas speech: “Hold on”

As a result of the pandemic, the annual speech was not held from Stockholm Castle, but rather was broadcast by SVT from the king’s home, Drottningholm Castle.

With an image of the queen on the table and seemingly relaxed, King Carl XVI Gustaf began by talking about community and traditions and how he himself was shaped by the older generation.

Corona’s criticism did not materialize

– That’s exactly what I think it is for many: the older generation is a link with history. With their help, we can see things from a broader perspective, said the king and continued:

But this year, tragically, many of these links have been broken as the corona pandemic claimed many, many thousands of lives, a significant loss.

But there were no deep criticisms about the handling of the crown.

There was no mention of the internationally acclaimed and national cargo plot the king made in SVT’s “The Year with the Royal Family”.

Dizzying and unusual

In that interview, the king called Sweden’s handling of the pandemic “a failure.” That expression was not repeated in the Christmas speech; instead, King Carlos XVI Gustavo summed up the crown year as dizzying and unusual.

Instead, the king took the opportunity to pay tribute to all those who worked with the pandemic.

– There are many of you in our country who work daily to combat the pandemic and take care of those who have become ill and make our society work. Your work can rarely be done from home and we are all completely dependent on what you do. I want to tell you: we see your efforts and we are all deeply grateful for them.

Two meters and two minutes

The king also wanted to send a special thought to all those affected by the pandemic.

– Let’s show them support and consideration this Christmas. We all have a responsibility. Two meters away can save lives. But you can also make two minutes of phone calls.

In the speech, the king looked ahead, explained that the light is returning, that vaccines are on the way and that we must believe in the future and face 2021 with courage.

The end of the speech was emphasized with emphasis:

– Hold on and hold!
