Cyclist Fabio Jakobsen suffered a severe fall during a race in August.
Now he and his girlfriend are talking for the first time about the terrible accident that put him in a coma.
– All I saw was blood, he says.
The accident took place in the run-up to the inaugural stage of the Tour of Poland in August. Dylan Groenewegen was leading when Fabio Jakobsen passed. Then Groenewegen closed the Jakobsen road and the latter crashed into the billboards at high speed and was seriously injured.
Jakobsen was treated at the scene before being taken to hospital, where he was placed in an artificial coma. Four months after the accident, the 24-year-old has spoken for the first time and remembers certain sequences.
– My teammate Florian rushed to rescue me. He was lying on the asphalt and there was blood everywhere. The nearby crowd did nothing, they were too shocked. Florian saw that I was choking on my own blood. I couldn’t move and saw the panic in my eyes. Out of reflex, he slightly raised my head so that blood could flow out of my mouth. After that, I calmed down, Jakobsen tells the Dutch newspaper AD, which the Cyklingnews site has translated in its entirety.
“Pray for him”
In front of the television, his girlfriend, Delore, followed the race.
– On Twitter, I could only read horror stories. There was nothing I could do but sit in front of the TV and pray that he didn’t die. After half an hour I packed a suitcase to go to Poland. Later that night, my phone rang. It was the team doctor. I let it play for a while because I was afraid to answer. He was so scared that he would say Fabio was gone, he says.

“Rectangular face”
It wasn’t until the third day in the intensive care unit that Jakobsen realized that he would survive. Among other things, he had a skull fracture, ten missing teeth, a broken nose, and damaged lungs.
– His face was rectangular. I only recognized small parts of her face: her eyebrows and eyelashes, says Delore.
Jakobsen is on the road to recovery today. He will undergo a new operation in February, but he has gotten on the bike and hopes to return fully.
