Tomas Montén would have been in Edmonton.

But instead, the junior crown league captain had to do something he had never done before.

He came to celebrate Christmas with his five-year-old son.

Tomas Montén’s Christmas Eve usually consists of making the final preparations for the premiere of the JVM.

But not this year.

The positive covid test forced Montén to stay home, and the Christmas celebrations with a group of hockey boys were exchanged for the family in Dalarna.

– You are divided because you are configured in JVM and you do it almost every year. But it is clear that this was a positive thing. I have two sons, ages eight and five, and I hadn’t been home with the five-year-old for Christmas before. “I’ve been away every year he’s been around and I’ve only been home once with the eight-year-old,” Montén says.

– It was a very nice patch on the wounds to celebrate Christmas with my boys.

Not idle

But just because Montén is half a globe from Edmonton doesn’t mean it’s inactive. The league captain is involved and contributes from home and has a close dialogue with Joel Rönnmark, who has primary responsibility and the rest of the management on site.

– I have explored players before and eliminated them based on different roles, how I see them, and how I think you can use players in the best way. I’ve been through this with Joel and Anders (Eriksén). They can then assess how it looks on the site, Montén says.

“I would lie otherwise”

It is before and after the games that Montén will help. During the matches themselves, it would be too complicated if he dedicated himself to training.

– Then Joel must make the decisions. It won’t work to do it remotely, says Montén.

How much do you really feel like a league captain?

– Five percent, haha.

– It’s hard. Now Joel is in charge and it is his decision that counts. I am helpful and supportive as a sounding board and with my thoughts and ideas. But those who are in place must make the decisions and start from their evaluations and thoughts. We have worked together for three years and Joel and I have been involved in developing the idea of the game and the team. I think they feel pretty safe in the process. But I would have preferred to be there than here at home, otherwise I would be lying if I said something else, says Montén.
