The massacre was revealed in November last year when the deeply intoxicated historian Oleg Sokolov was rescued from the icy Moj Canal in St. Petersburg. A pair of woman’s arms were found in his backpack, which turned out to belong to his 24-year-old girlfriend and former student, whom he shot and then cut.
The 64-year-old historian has admitted to the murder and claims it happened on the spur of the moment during a fight with his girlfriend. He is sentenced for murder and illegal possession of a weapon to 12.5 years in prison.
– He was aware of his actions at the time of the crime, said Russian judge Yulia Maximenko when she read the verdict.
The murder has received a lot of attention in Russia and has sparked a debate on the widespread problem of men’s violence against women.
Sokolov was known as one of the world’s leading Napoleonic experts and has been honored with the French Legion of Honor. He has written several books about the French Emperor, he liked to dress up for him and is said to have wanted to be addressed with the words “Your Majesty”.
But at St. Petersburg University, where he was a professor, there were also several reports of sexual harassment and violent behavior against female students. Following the murder, strong criticism was leveled at the university for having seen Sokolov’s behavior through its fingers.
