Are you alone this Christmas Eve?

You are not alone in this.

Much of the world that celebrates Christmas suffers from much stricter rules than Sweden and you should try to make the most of the small.

After a year in which 1.7 million people lost their lives to covid-19 and with a continued high risk of infection, most countries are trying to curb the death toll through various restrictions.

Germany has banned Christmas markets, which are often a great holiday treat for many.

Catholics cannot celebrate midnight Mass with the Pope; instead, the Vatican is celebrating a mass at ten o’clock so as not to violate Italy’s night curfew.

Pick up food and refills

In the predominantly Catholic Philippines, many choose to stay home to avoid the risk of infection on public transportation or lengthy and cumbersome quarantine periods.

– I have ordered food to go and go back to watching old movies. And she has video calls with the family, Kim Patria, who lives alone in Manila, tells AFP.

Belgians are perhaps a little more sociable, they can receive a guest at home, on Christmas Eve like any other day.

Travel to and from the UK was recently stopped by many other countries wanting to avoid the highly contagious new type of coronavirus. And even if regulations have been relaxed a bit, thousands of foreigners remain stagnant.

– Are you coming home for Christmas? Forget this! says trucker Laurent Beghin, who delivered his cargo several days ago but is trapped at the French border.

Good ending? Sour ending!

In Australia, which has managed to contain the infection, a hotbed of infection in Sydney’s northern suburbs has forced many to stay home. Jimmy Arslan, who owns two cafes there, says sales are down 75 percent and the family in Canberra has had to cancel their planned visit.

– A very, very bitter end to a bitter year, he tells AFP.

– Let’s welcome the year 2021 and start 2020 at the end!

New Years celebrations are expected to be similarly subdued, with closures in Austria, Scotland and Northern Ireland and curfews in Portugal on New Year’s Eve.

Sydney will still postpone its New Years fireworks from Harbor Bridge no matter what, promises the state’s head of state, Gladys Berejiklian.

But he asks everyone to stay home and watch it on TV.
