Nicola Sturgeon writes on Twitter that “it is worth remembering that Brexit is being carried out against the will of Scotland” adding:
“And there is no deal that exceeds what Brexit takes away from us. It is time to set the course for our own future as an independent European country.”
“Good compromise”
Irish Prime Minister Micheal Martin, on the other hand, says the deal “is a good compromise and a balanced outcome” that will avoid a hard border with Northern Ireland. He adds that “Britain will always be a close friend and partner.”
French President Emmanuel Macron, who has just recovered from the coronavirus infection, tweets that “Europe’s unity and determination paid off.” He adds that “the agreement with the United Kingdom is essential to protect our citizens, our fishermen and producers.”
German Chancellor Angela Merkel also praises the agreement, saying she is convinced that the agreement represents a “good result” that Germany can support.
Positive lofven
Sweden’s Prime Minister Stefan Löfven is also positive in a written statement to TT:
“With an agreement, we are much better equipped, although of course the UK will still feel like leaving the EU. The framework now exists for future close cooperation between the UK, Sweden and the EU.”
European leaders in southern Europe also praise the deal. “Britain will be an important partner and ally of the EU and Italy,” Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte wrote on Twitter.
Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez greets the agreement on Twitter, but emphasizes that talks with Britain on the future status of Gibraltar must continue.
