The exception to the travel ban from Denmark, for those with urgent family reasons, does not include Christmas celebrations. This is announced by the border police of the southern region.

On Wednesday, the government introduced changes to the travel ban from Denmark to make things easier for people living on Bornholm. Furthermore, Danish citizens, as well as British citizens, who had “urgent family reasons” were excluded.

But what is included in urgent family reasons has caused confusion. Member of Parliament Niels Paarup-Petersen (C) from Malmö says several concerned families contacted him with questions about what applies.

– These are people who live here in Sweden and are Swedish citizens but have children who are registered in Denmark. They are not sure that children can come here to celebrate Christmas, he says.

The Ministry of Justice announces that it is up to the police to assess how the letter should be interpreted. An assessment that the Border Police has now carried out together with the National Operations Department, and which runs the risk of being a Christmas disappointment for those who were waiting to cross the strait to celebrate.

– Our interpretation of this is that it is about urgent and acute reasons such as funerals, serious illness in the family or childbirth, palliative care. But they must be really extraordinary things. Celebrating Christmas is not an urgent family reason according to our assessment, says Tommy Brännström, head of the border police in the southern region.
