The ugliest of all is the Stockholm School of Architecture, at least if you ask members of the Architecture Uprising.
– It’s ready for demolition, you should build something beautiful there instead, says Sigvard Freylander, President of Architecture Uprising.
He says that the buildings that have been voted the ugliest buildings in Sweden have one thing in common: they are built in a modernist spirit.
– Since 1930, when modernism broke into Sweden, everything that is built in Sweden is in that spirit. It is more or less forbidden to build otherwise, says Sigvard Freylander.
A total of 50,000 people voted the Östermalmsgatan School of Architecture in Stockholm as the ugliest building in Sweden. Sigvard Freylander thinks it’s because he’s exceptionally brutal.
– It’s so simple, jarring and asymmetrical. That’s exactly what architects like, says Sigvard Freylander.
Many ugly houses in the south
The winner of the contest will receive a demolition grant as a Christmas gift. The 50,000 members of the Architecture Uprising are prepared to raise funds that can sponsor the demolition of the School of Architecture.
-More than five decades ago and is ready to be demolished, even the modernists themselves believe it, he says.
Sigvard Freylander would like something beautiful to be built on the site.
– It is well located, next to one of the most beautiful streets in Stockholm: Danderydsgatan. Many who live there find it outrageous that the School of Architecture is located there, he says.
Other buildings on the list of the ten ugliest buildings in the country include Domkyrkoforum in Lund, Townhouse Japan in Landskrona, and Skatteskrapan in Sundsvall.
Five out of ten houses on the top list. As well as Domkyrkoforum in Lund, the town of Caroli in Malmö and Townhouse Japan in Landskrona can be seen here.
And those houses are now part of a proud southern Swedish tradition: In 2019, the so-called Rosthuset in Malmö was named the ugliest building in Sweden.
