The massacre occurred near the city of Bulen in western Ethiopia.
More than 100 people have been killed by gunmen in an attack in the troubled Benishangul-Gumuz region of western Ethiopia, according to the country’s National Human Rights Commission.
During the attack at dawn on Wednesday, gunmen are said to have entered an area near the city of Bulen and shot people and set fire to houses where people were sleeping, according to the human rights commission.
One farmer, Belay Wajera, told Reuters he counted 82 dead in a field near his home. He and his family woke up to the shooting and fled their home. His wife and five of his children died while four other children are missing.
A doctor at the scene claims that he and his colleagues treated 38 wounded people, most with gunshot wounds. Patients have told him about relatives who were killed with a knife and that armed men set fire to houses and shot people who tried to escape.
– We were not prepared for this and we have run out of medicines, says a nurse from the same hospital.
Benishangul-Gumuz, which is relatively close to conflict-ravaged Tigray, has in recent years been the scene of violent clashes between different ethnic groups.
In mid-November, at least 34 people were killed in an attack on a passenger bus in the region.
