The Ethiopian Human Rights Commission reports that more than 100 people died in western Ethiopia on Wednesday morning. It is the latest in a series of massacres for ethnic conflict.

According to local politicians, the death toll exceeds 200.

The attack has nothing to do with the conflict in the Tigray region, which has been raging since early November, the AP writes.

The Prime Minister visited the area

The massacre on Wednesday took place in the Benishangul-Gumuz region. The day before, the country’s prime minister, Abiy Ahmed, had visited the area to try to calm himself down and ensure that those responsible for previous acts of violence are brought to justice.

Local politician Belete Molla told the AP that residents of several towns are still surrounded by attackers Wednesday night. At the same time, it is not clear who the attackers are, but according to Belete, they are members of a militia.

More than 80 ethnic groups

On November 1, at least 54 people were killed in an attack in the Oromia region of western Ethiopia, according to Amnesty International. And in Benishangul-Gumuz, at least 14 civilians were killed in early October.

There are more than 80 ethnic groups in Ethiopia, many of them in conflict with each other.

The bloodiest conflict is currently underway in Tigray, in the north of the country, where rebels have been fighting central government troops since early November.
