During the Aktuellt on Tuesday, party leaders Ulf Kristersson (M), Nooshi Dadgostar (V) and Interior Minister Mikael Damberg (S) met for a debate on the government’s crown strategy.
– It’s horrible, we have 8000 dead right after. 10 times more than our neighboring countries in the Nordic region. In that sense, we have failed, Kristersson said.
Dadgostar agreed that it was a huge failure.
– We are entering a very heavy Christmas where many people would have been with us, is not it. And we have a year with a very stressed health that cannot take its vacations. This is my starting point because what we have done this year has been a great failure.
“I can’t have the answers beforehand”
When asked why Sweden has been so affected by the virus, Interior Minister Mikael Damberg gave several examples:
– We had a lot of infection and therefore a great spread of infection in society.
It also highlights system errors in the care of the elderly and at home.
– Both in terms of resources and skills, the connection with healthcare; the vulnerable situation of the staff, their working conditions, working conditions, shared shifts, precarious working conditions. All this discussion should lead us in Sweden also to learn from the pandemic.
“Of course responsible”
Damberg says the government “of course has responsibility” as it rules the kingdom, but explained that it was a challenging situation.
– It is a new disease, you do not have the answers beforehand and you have learned in the meantime.
That’s why strategy needs to be changed, said Kristersson, who said mistakes were known before.
– There have been investigations that have been designated and closed without the errors being corrected. I do not understand why it is so difficult for the government to say: we have failed, the strategy has not worked. Let’s do something better together.
– There is no one who thinks that it is not a failure that so many people have died. I have not heard a representative say anything else, says Damberg.
The Interior Minister believes that it is not the strategy that is wrong, but that the measures must be changed, which he says is done.
