An 18-year-old American woman traveled to the Cayman Islands to watch her boyfriend compete in a jet ski competition. But instead of isolating herself for 14 days, she left the hotel room. Now she and her boyfriend have been sentenced to four months in prison, writes the New York Times.
It was in November that the 18-year-old American traveled to the Cayman Islands to watch her boyfriend compete in a jet ski competition.
Once at the scene, the local authorities told him that he had to be tested for covid-19 and isolate himself in the hotel for 14 days. The only problem was that she arrived on a Friday and her boyfriend’s jet ski competition was held on Sunday.
After receiving a negative test result, he tore off the electronic surveillance tape, left the hotel room and headed to the beach where the competition was taking place.
The organizers of the contest were informed that the woman had broken her isolation crown and alerted the police. The woman and her boyfriend were arrested; the boyfriend was suspected of helping her escape from the hotel room. They both pleaded guilty in court and were sentenced to four months in prison.
“This is the most egregious crime imaginable, stemming from selfishness and arrogance,” Judge Roger Chapple said during the main trial.
“She’s crying, she wants to go home,” the 18-year-old’s grandmother said in a news story on NBC Monday. “She knows she made a mistake and admits it, but she’s pretty hysterical right now.”
The Cayman Islands are British territory with about 65,000 inhabitants. The archipelago has reported 316 corona cases and two deaths so far.
