An uncertain and stormy season ended in minor for Helsingborgs IF, who were relegated from Allsvenskan to Superettan
After it became clear that the club had dropped, head coach Olof Mellberg declared that he was leaving the club.
President Krister Afzelius also decided to leave Helsingborg, which in recent seasons has also been hit by a strained economy.
Now, however, it appears that one of the vacant positions will be filled with a former IFK Gothenburg profile.
Game sports director Andreas Granqvist is said to have found a replacement for Olof Mellberg in former Blåvitt coach Jörgen Lennartsson, Helsingborgs Dagblad reports.
– I don’t comment on names. We have a list of names that we work with. The ambition remains to be able to present a solution before Christmas, Andreas Granqvist tells Helsingborgs Dagblad.
Jörgen Lennartsson previously worked at the club, but later as assistant coach to Nanne Bergstrand. Under the leadership of Jörgen Lennartsson and Nanne Bergstrand, the club qualified for the Champions League after beating Inter and goalkeeper Sven Andersson, became “San Siro-Sven” after saving a penalty from Álvaro Recoba, which finally completed the ascent.
Sven Andersson is looking to join Jörgen Lennartsson on the senior staff and another well-known HIF profile, Mattias Lindström, is set to help the former Blue and White coach, writes Skåne Football. Álvaro Santos is also destined to be part of the staff, writes Helsingborgs Dagblad.
Jörgen Lennartsson’s last coaching assignment was for Norway’s Lilleström and he left the club in 2019. Prior to that, he was head coach of Häcken, the Swedish Under-21 national team, Stabæk, Elfsborg and IFK Gothenburg.
