“However, no one has calculated how much the lost cultural experiences will cost in the long run,” Annica Kvint writes in an article on the Gustavsberg Art Gallery Township’s competitive exhibition (DN 11/12).
The article is part of a series that, without delving into the availability of art and culture in the municipality of Värmdö, criticizes our decision and indirectly portrays us as culturally hostile.
Operating costs of three million kronor a year are sidelined in favor of the well-being to which art contributes. I don’t need to be convinced that art and culture often beautify life, but for us it is important to focus and distribute our resources for the common good.
We both appreciate and we are proud of the cultural history that Gustavsberg carries with him. A story based on enthusiasts and entrepreneurs, not on municipal activities created by officials and politicians. Thanks to the history of the site, we now have almost 100 active artists in Gustavsberg. They create in newly renovated properties that just a few years ago were privately owned again.
Right next to it is also the Gustavsberg Porcelain Museum, which recently opened its doors and therefore the National Museum has a branch in Värmdö. A direct result of the local commitment paid for and made possible by the municipality of Värmdö.
Another gigantic building, the former Gustavsberg porcelain factory, in the same area is ready for more cultural elements in part of the area. We see in front of us that part of the property will re-emerge in the form of a house of culture and, therefore, also a new era.
Has no one missed Artipelag and its fantastic art gallery, even though it is run by a private actor?
We are a municipality with limited resources. Regarding the sum of three million, I can inform the author of the article that it corresponds to as much money as, for example, Gustavsberg’s music and ballet, the Värmdö theater school, the Värmdö IF and the Värmdö riding club together they receive the support of the association. Activities aimed at young people.
Our task of managing the assistance resources of the residents of the municipality includes the task of sifting as well. The house of culture that we want to build will require a significant increase in operating costs. Many streams are small, they form a river, it is all about priorities. It is not more complicated than that.
