Time and again, both the European and British negotiating delegations have declared that the Brexit talks are at a crucial stage. Now another has expired in a long line of deadlines, when the EU’s Michel Barnier and Britain’s David Frost decided on Sunday to continue deliberations on a post-Brexit deal on Monday.

The European Parliament had previously stated that it must be notified by midnight on Sunday to approve a possible deal at an extraordinary meeting from Monday to Friday. That deadline has already passed.

Britain formally left the EU on January 31 this year, but is now negotiating with Brussels what will apply to trade, fisheries and other cooperation from January 1, when the current transition rules expire.

Despite many long days of negotiations, the parties have failed to agree, among other things, on access to fishing waters. According to a British BBC source, there will be no deal unless the EU gives “real change” in the near future.
