18 villas and a total of 50 people are evacuated after a fire last night.

The fire spread to a garage with gas cylinders filled with highly explosive material.

– There is a risk of splinters that are directly life-threatening, says Per Tillander, director of operations for the Södertörn fire protection association.

A fire has spread from a garbage room to a garage on the outskirts of Gnesta, in the municipality of Södertälje. When the rescue service arrived at the scene at 04.20, the fire was fully developed.

A large area of 300 meters, as well as highway 57, between Gnesta and Järna, has been blocked due to the risk of explosion. In the garage there are gas cylinders with, among other things, oxygen, LPG and acetylene.

A total of 18 villas and about 50 people have been evacuated. The rescue service works intensively on the scene as acetylene gas in particular is highly explosive.

At 07.15 am, the rescue service announces that the fire has not yet been extinguished, but has fallen. However, the risk of explosion persists, says Per Tillander, director of operations of the Södertörn fire protection association.

– Our hope is that when it dawns we can see the acetylene bottle and then shoot it with a rifle with a tracking light so that the liquid comes out and becomes harmless. If we can’t see it, we’ll stay here with barricades until tonight, says Tillander and continues:

– There is a risk of splinters that are directly fatal, so we stay behind safe objects so as not to be exposed.

No one was injured in the fire. Police are on site to redirect traffic. Police are also investigating whether the incident should be classified as a crime.
