This week vaccinations began with the Pfizer / Biontech vaccine in the US and now there have been alarms about allergic reactions.
At a press conference late Friday night, the FDA announced that it is investigating five cases. The FDA cooperates with the CDC, but also with colleagues in the UK, writes The Hill.
– We will examine as much data as we can for each individual reaction to find out exactly what happened. And we’ll also try to see if we can understand which vaccine components contribute to making them, said Peter Marks, unit manager for the FDA’s Department of Biological Research and Development.
Last week, British authorities confirmed that two people had suffered similar reactions to the vaccine. After that, it was recommended not to take the drug for those who have experienced severe allergic reactions.
“Keep watching this”
It is not yet clear what causes allergic reactions in some. However, the FDA chief mentioned the chemical polyethylene glycol as a possible explanation. It is found in the Pfizer / Biontech and Moderna vaccine.
“Currently, we have the right mitigation strategy, with access to treatment for a severe allergic reaction ready, and we continue to watch this very carefully,” Peter Marks said at the press conference.
The FDA has stated in its guidelines that most Americans with allergies can get the vaccine. However, those who have had severe reactions to previous vaccines should abstain.
