New strain of British virus may spread faster

The new covid-19 variant recently discovered in the UK appears to be spreading faster than previous variants. Now a feverish effort is being made to rule out that it also has a higher death rate, according to British government medical adviser Chris Whitty.

“As a result of the rapid spread of the new variety, preliminary data and the rapidly growing incidence in the southeast, the advisory body estimates that the new strain could spread more rapidly,” Whitty said in a statement.

According to Health Minister Matt Hancock, at least 60 local authorities in the UK have registered cases caused by the new variant of the virus. There is no evidence that the strain reacts differently to the covid-19 vaccines that have been investigated, the BBC reports.

The new variant of the virus has also been found in nine Danes, according to the Ritzau news agency.

Last week, the UK launched its vaccination campaign after the Pfizer-Biontech vaccine was approved at record speed.
