In September last year, Selma, a four-year-old cat, disappeared from her home in Gråbo, on the outskirts of Gothenburg. After a month, mother Mimmie Ruus began to lose hope of ever seeing her again, when suddenly a woman from Åland contacted her on Facebook and wondered if she had sold her cat to an Åland resident.
– At first I thought that now there is someone who drives with me or sucks with me! Then I thought: Has Selma been kidnapped? Who wants to kidnap a farm cat? But of course she is a very cute and pretty cat and there are crazy people out there, says Mimmie Ruus.

When she received confirmation that Selma was actually found in Åland, the token soon fell off. Mimmie’s husband, Roland, is a musician and had played on Åland’s Cinderella ship the same day Selma disappeared. The cat must have climbed onto the instrument wagon, hiding there during the trip to Stockholm, and jumped when the instruments were unloaded into the boat.
– Then he got off the ferry and wandered around in a residential area for several weeks. It was very lucky that it was chipped because otherwise it would never have found a home. As soon as I understood that it was her, I felt right here at home, I got really excited and laughed and laughed at everything, says Mimmie Ruus.

After Selma received a rabies syringe and a passport, she was quarantined for three weeks before she was able to meet her mother, her master and her friend Sigge at their home in Gråbå. Soon enough, Mimmie Ruus had the idea of making a children’s book out of adventure, but it was only when the corona pandemic hit and it was no longer possible to invent things in the evenings and on weekends that she sat down and started writing .

– I thought, uh, I’m just driving! I have done it all myself, with the help of my sisters, sons and daughters-in-law. It’s made me a little nervous that people think I’m arrogant, but the book was so nice, she says.
Selma the cat has stayed close to the house in Gråbo since she came home and does not appear to have been significantly affected by her adventure.
– I don’t think it took that long, she lives in her own little cat host. But every night when I go to bed, she jumps on the bed, lies on her stomach, and rolls over. She didn’t actually do that before she disappeared, says Mimmie Ruus.
