Swedish trade and Visit warn of major problems after new government announcement

The new restrictions of the Government and the Public Health Agency, which will come into effect on December 24, strongly affected businesses. Instead of hiring around 130,000 new employees as a normal year, the Swedish trade has a short-term leave and was announced in 2020.

– We share the Prime Minister and government’s concerns about the spread of the infection, but the new restrictions pose great challenges for us, says Mats Hedenström, Swedish Trade’s trade policy manager.

He said that Act As early as the spring, guidelines were developed on how to reduce congestion in stores. And you are prepared to do everything you can to further reduce the risk of infection in stores and shopping centers.

– But for us to deal with this, support measures are also required. If restrictions are not followed by support, we risk sitting on a jobless bomb early next year. We are currently in the most important period of the year and we are heading towards what is always a weaker first quarter.

Mats Hedenström wants to see two types of support: Opportunity for short-term layoffs and help with managing fixed costs like rent. Also, the money must arrive quickly, says Mats Hedenström:

– I would recommend that the Prime Minister call his colleague in Denmark, Mette Frederiksen.

Also the hotel and restaurant industry now i want to see quick support money. More than 100,000 people have already lost their jobs, been notified or laid off in the hotel industry.

– I have the utmost respect for the fact that we must stop the pandemic, but we must review what we can do to save jobs and businesses. Now it is said that companies will wait for their support money until well into the spring. They say “persevere”, but how do you persevere when the money runs out? says Jonas Siljhammar, CEO of the Hospitality Industry and Employers Organization Visit.

– The support measures that have already been promised must be implemented now. Then if you have to correct or verify something, you should do it later.

He criticizes the fact that the maximum number of people for a party in a restaurant is reduced from eight to four people and that the sale of alcohol is prohibited at 8 p.m. instead of 10 p.m.

– We have a commercial ban because then we have to close the restaurants at 20:30. We no longer have night activities.

Also the Confederation of Swedish Companies Deputy Chief Economist Jonas Frycklund calls for faster government action.

– The new restrictions are harsh and affect companies already affected. We did not question their assessments, but now they did not say anything about how companies can be compensated for what now affects them even more. There are long delays in government support measures and it takes a long time to get the money out. Now we have to accelerate that process and we have to expand support, he says.
