Roger Svensson: Close a gigantic experiment

Professors Lars Calmfors and Petter Lundborg considers it obvious that the level of restrictions has been the most important explanatory factor for the variation in countries in deaths related to the covid-19 pandemic. That is why they propose closures of gyms, cafeterias and restaurants – activities that today are half empty and hardly characterized by congestion – until vaccination begins.

However, to access where the shoe presses, you must first find out which groups have been most affected by covid-19. Even before Europe staged its closings in March, reports were available showing that deaths from COVID-19, such as the annual flu, were systematic in certain risk groups: the elderly with underlying illnesses. Statistics have since backed this up. In general terms, deaths in Sweden can be divided by 50% among the elderly in special housing, 25% among the elderly with home care and 25% among others. Even in the latter group, older people with various ailments dominate.
