Negotiations between the EU and the UK are slow. With the turn of the year, the transition period passes and they are expected to sign an agreement before then, otherwise it will be a so-called “hard Brexit”. The great issue that separates the parties concerns, among other things, fishing. On Friday, Finance Minister Magdalena Andersson (s) and Swedish Customs Charlotte Svensson held a press conference on the occasion of the withdrawal from the EU at the end of the year.
– We are working for an agreement, it benefits the entire EU and it is the United Kingdom that would lose the most if it is not converted into an agreement, says Magdalena Andersson.
She urges all companies to continue operating or you should start negotiating with the UK to prepare if you haven’t already.
– It is a difficult situation for companies and individuals to make sure they are well prepared for the changes that are occurring now, he says.
– If you, as a company, have not applied for a permit from the authorities or contacted the UK tax authority, it is time to start now.
Following the UK’s withdrawal from the EU, with or without an agreement, Swedish Customs will be a central authority in Sweden.
– Great Britain leaves the customs union and the customs territory of the EU and becomes what is called a third country. Whether it is an agreement on future relations with the UK or not, there will be customs formalities. You will need to submit customs declarations for import and export. The requirement for customs formalities arises immediately at midnight on December 31, says Charlotte Svensson, managing director of Swedish Customs.
Before Brexit, companies now need – who have not previously traded with countries outside the EU – including obtaining an Eori number, a kind of registration number to be able to trade between the EU and other countries.
– It is not possible to import or export to a country outside the EU without that number, says Charlotte Svensson.
– Happily, the last week has seen an increase in requests for Eori numbers, she says.
Even for individuals, Britain’s exit from the EU will mean changes. This applies to e-commerce, where a purchase regardless of value will be taxed with Swedish VAT. Customs duties are also added when buying goods that exceed 1,600 SEK. There will also be changes in customs fees when traveling.
With flights and ferries, a fare is added from and includes goods with a value of more than SEK 4,700. With other means of transport, it is applied from the sum of 3,300 SEK. The declaration is mandatory for amounts that exceed these amounts.
Swedish Customs fear that There may also be lines with trucks in Sweden. For this reason, among other things, the number of exhibition spaces in the port of Gothenburg has increased.
– We have prepared for Brexit. We’ve done it several times, but now it’s sharp mode, it’s really sharp mode. We want to make sure it flows as smoothly as possible, says Charlotte Svensson.
– We will do our best to ensure that the flow of goods and transportation flow as smoothly as possible. At the same time, we must carry out our mission and carry out certain checks. There may be delays if companies do not obtain the correct permit or do not declare the export or import.
