Former Burundi President Pierre Buyoya during a meeting with Turkey’s Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavusoglu in September has died.

Former Burundi President Pierre Buyoya died after being infected with COVID-19, according to a family member and a government source.

According to a relative who did not want to give his name, the 71-year-old died on his way to Paris for treatment.

Buyoya ruled Burundi for a total of 13 years, from 1987 to 1993 and from 1996 to 2003. On both occasions he took power through military coups. In October, he was sentenced to life in prison for his absence for the assassination of President Melchior Ndadaye, who was assassinated in a 1993 coup after four months in power. Ndadaye’s death was followed by a civil war that cost at least 300,000 lives.

From 2012 to November this year, Buyoya was the African Union envoy for Mali and the Sahel region.
