On Thursday, Henrik Lundqvist shared the news on social media. The star goalkeeper, who recently signed for the Washington Capitals in the NHL, will not play for the club next season.

It breaks my heart (literally) to share this news: I will not be joining Capitals next season. After many weeks of testing and conversations with specialists across the country, it has now been determined that I have a heart defect that will prevent me from going out on the ice. Together we have decided that the risk of gambling before treatment is too high. So I’ll spend the next few months figuring out what’s best, “Lundqvist writes alongside an image on social media.

Recently, on December 3, Lundqvist shared how well he enjoyed life in his new team.

– Everything feels very new but also very inspiring. I already enjoy both the boys and the organization, the star of the Swedish goalkeeper told Sportbladet at the time.

But now, just two weeks later, the situation has changed dramatically.

In his post on social media, Lundqvist further writes that last week’s test results mean there are no alternatives other than this decision.

Washington Capitals has also posted a video on his Twitter where Lundqvist talks about his decision.

– It is still very difficult for me to process this and it is also shocking for me if I am honest, says a Henrik Lundqvist taken on the video.

The Swedish star goalkeeper left New York Rangers after fifteen years at the club and has recently trained with his new team Washington Capitals. Lundqvist does not mention what type of heart defect it is, nor does he claim that his career is over.
