The elders are at the center when Nooshi Dadgostar gives his first Christmas speech as leader of the Left Party. He attacks the demands for profit and poor working conditions in the care of the elderly, and proposes an increase in the guaranteed pension.

The newly elected Left Leader delivers his Christmas speech on Facebook, at his home from the living room by the Christmas tree.

And much of the conversation revolves around the home, the home of good people who showed significant deficiencies during the pandemic. Not least when it comes to protecting the elderly.

– What has happened is a failure, says Nooshi Dadgostar.

– It seems like a long time has passed since it was warmth and time with the elderly that characterized the daily lives of those who work in elderly care. What is worth more is valued less.

“Most important benefit”

He praises the hard work of the care staff and blames the privatizations and market thinking in the care of the elderly.

– Squeezing profits is more important than staff conditions, says Dadgostar.

Nooshi Dadgostar takes retired Kerstin as an example of how he thinks profit interests should govern. A pensioner living in Huddinge, where the bourgeois government wants to privatize the municipal home care service for reasons of profitability, something Kerstin opposes.

– “Merry Christmas” was buried for Kerstin in cold bourgeois politics. Annie Lööf, Ebba Busch and Ulf Kristersson took it from him, says leader V.

– People are not businesses. They are not goods that are stacked one on top of the other.

Increased guarantee pension

The Left Party has long lobbied for the pension system to be changed. In his speech, Nooshi Dadgostar highlights the roughly 300,000 so-called poor retirees in the country.

– We propose that the guarantee pension be increased by 800 SEK per month. We also want to make sure it follows the revenue development of the society, says the V-leader.

He criticizes how the government and the C and L coalition parties have prioritized when it comes to tax cuts, including by removing the protection tax for high-income people.

– It is depressing that the government has chosen to prioritize tax breaks for the group that earns more than 61,000 a month, he says.
