The man has assaulted and raped women twice.

Now the police choose to do something unusual: They publish a ghost image based on a new DNA technology.

– We will have perseverance in this. We will continue until the perpetrator is arrested, says Niklas Kraft in the police.

The unknown perpetrator threatened the woman in her 30s with a knife and raped her near the Skavlöten outdoor area in Täby, north of Stockholm, on Sunday June 28.

The man, who was completely unknown to the woman, is said to have chased her from a bathroom spot before attacking her.

But he left traces behind. Just like he did at Morga Hage by Lake Ekoln in Uppsala 2018.

– During the investigation, we were able to obtain traces in the form of DNA of the perpetrator. We were later able to see that a similar rape in Uppsala in 2018 had DNA from the same perpetrator, says Niklas Kraft, who is the head of the police sex crimes group in the northern police area.

When the Täby police found out that he was the same perpetrator of the two rapes, they took over the Uppsala investigation.

– It was an intense police work in this case. The case has been heavily involved within the police but also by the public, says Niklas Kraft.

Over the summer, police were able to release a ghost image of an alleged perpetrator to the public and, since then, clues have come in.

– We have received a lot of advice in this case. We have received proposals from between 100 and 150 people who could be the perpetrators. But we haven’t gotten the proper advice yet, says Niklas Kraft.

Uses new DNA technology

In all, some 30 men have been questioned and summoned in the case, but all have been removed from office.

Now the police choose to publish a supposed satellite image. It is a form of ghost image that is created using DNA instead of descriptions. Previously, the police had only released satellite images to the public a few times.

– These images are made by an American company. With the help of markers in the genome, they can assess the probabilities of what a person would look like. They can assess origin, eye color, skin tone, etc., with a high degree of precision, says Niklas Kraft.

The perpetrator likely has a connection to the crime scenes.

– The crime scene in Täby is quite public. But the one in Uppsala, we think the perpetrator should have some connection to him, he says.

But at the same time, Niklas Kraft points out that one should not stare blindly at ghost images. If you think you know someone who may have committed these crimes, the police want information about it.

You want to receive new advice

Other information about the perpetrator is that he should be tall and thin and the victim in Uppsala stated that the man spoke a Swedish dialect that she could not specify further.

– If you have doubts about whether to tip us or not, we want you to, then we can see if the tip was of interest or not, says Niklas Kraft.

He says the investigation will continue until the crimes are solved.

– We will have perseverance in this. We will continue until the perpetrator is arrested, says Niklas Kraft.
