The amount of coronavirus in Gothenburg’s sewage has increased more than 100 times in a week.
– It has exploded and it’s crazy – My stomach hurts when I think about how Christmas and the New Year can be, says Heléne Norder, virologist and professor of microbiology at the Sahlgrenska Academy, in Göteborgs-Posten.
The presence of the virus in wastewater is now 60 times higher than this spring’s peak.
During the pandemic, researchers at Sahlgrenska University Hospital (SU) have continuously examined the water, from toilets to treatment plants. In the first week of December, the amount of coronavirus increased significantly. Last week, the curve went straight up.
– The connection between the high results and the increased workload in health care is clear, says the newspaper Per Albertsson, coordinator of the SU pandemic group.
It is not clear how many people are hiding behind the virus; different people shed different amounts of virus and at different times.
