A record number of new coronavirus deaths are reported in South Korea, where health care resources are depleted and fears of a new strict shutdown have prompted people to start hoarding food.

Another 22 people with the coronavirus have died in the country, which is significantly more than the previous highest number of 13 deaths that occurred earlier this week, the infection control authority KDCA announces.

The death toll is expected to rise further as the number of infected has risen dramatically, especially in and around the densely populated capital of Seoul.

The government warned that tougher measures against company operations may be relevant, even if it is considered as a last resort.

“I have already ordered dozens of packages of fast food online, and many of my friends and their families are rushing to the big grocery stores,” one resident told Reuters.

According to the government, an advance warning will be issued if strict restrictions are introduced.

– It won’t be the case that all grocery stores are closed and you can’t buy essentials, says KCDA’s Lee Sang-Won.

For much of the year, South Korea has managed to keep the number of infected people low. The new wave has arrived in various groups in Seoul and the city’s suburbs.

A total of 634 deaths have been reported in the country.
