Young adults are dying at historic levels, says a group of researchers in a new study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. This speaks against the image of Covid-19 that many believe, as a relatively harmless disease for the very young. Because even though those over 65 have been the most affected, with 80% of deaths in the United States, the death rate is high even in the youngest adults.
In the 25-44 age group, between March and July, nearly 12,000 more died than expected, according to historical figures. July was probably the deadliest July for the age group in modern American history. In the last 20 years, an average of 11,000 young adults have died in July, this year the figure was 16,000, which shows a death rate of more than 45 percent.
You can claim that covid-19 is the driving force behind excess mortality
Although it is too early to say that all the excess mortality has to do with covid-19, the researchers have enough data to be able to establish that the pandemic is the driving force behind the figures.
And the trend has continued through the fall. 154,000 people in the age group are expected to die in a normal year; this is a figure that was already exceeded a month ago. Even if the death toll suddenly returns to a normal rate, which they will not do, the United States will land on more than 170,000 young adults dead by 2020, the researchers write in the New York Times, stating:
“For too long, we and our colleagues, the authorities and the general public have repeated the message that COVID-19 is dangerous for the elderly and that the very young are doing well. It is true that deaths among adults among the ages of 25 and 44 account for less than 3 percent of COVID-19 deaths in the United States. But what we thought earlier about relative innocence … just doesn’t match the emerging data. “
No excess mortality among young people in Sweden
In Sweden, 88 people between 20 and 50 have died with covid-19 and it has not been possible to establish any excess mortality in the age group here. However, for older people, excess mortality is high in Sweden.
