The Infection Control Doctor: Look No Escape Before Christmas!

One in four Scanians who tested for COVID-19 last week turned out to be infected. The situation is dire and this is not the time to look for loopholes in advice for the Christmas and New Year holidays. The sharp call comes from infection control doctor Eva Melander.

The situation can be easy, if everyone follows the advice to just hang out with their family or in a small circle. It’s a personal responsibility, Eva Melander emphasized.Image: Johan Nilsson / TT

– If you have the slightest thought about whether something is appropriate, don’t do it! she says.

– We have had much more infection in Northwest Skåne, this week it has changed and we see more in central Skåne But we have a spread of the infection everywhere.

At the last Skåne Region press conference on the pandemic situation before Christmas, all the curves pointed in the wrong direction.

Every day, more people are admitted to hospitals with severe covid-19, the number of new cases constantly exceeds a thousand every day, more and more care employees in the Helsingborg, Malmö, Lund and Kristianstad hospitals are told that their holidays from Christmas are in danger.

Of those who are put to the test in the case of suspected infection, only one to two percent received positive responses in early fall. Last week, that proportion on self-sampling was 25 percent.

– It is loud and visible at all ages. We don’t see an increase among the elderly, but we continue to have infection problems among nursing home staff, says Eva Melander.

Skåne has a high testing capacity in the country, especially compared to the other metropolitan regions. The number of tests now exceeds 40,000 per week, of which about half are self-assessments.

But there again it has become more difficult to book. Especially in Malmö, yesterday the wait time for a self-test was four days or more.

It will be easy soon, regional director Alf Jönsson promised. The region has acquired more laboratory capacity.

– Since yesterday, we sent samples to a laboratory in Munich. And we’ll open more car sampling sites, he said.
