36 people were killed when the Kyoto Animation animation studio caught fire in July 2019. The 42-year-old man who previously admitted to the act is now on trial, local media report.
Most of those killed in the fire, which took almost a day to extinguish, were young people employed by Kyoto Animation. The act was the deadliest in decades in the country and caused national shock and pain.
The 42-year-old was arrested shortly after the attack, but has since been treated for the severe burns he suffered in the fire. He should have regained consciousness only in August of last year.
Another 30 people were injured in the attack. The perpetrator is said to have accused the animation studio of plagiarism, something that Kyoto Animation denied.
– I think about her often. I think about her during the fire and wonder how painful it was for her, Shinichi Tsuda, whose daughter died in the fire, told the NHK public service channel in May.
