That is why the infection could spread so quickly – “Dangerous”

Expressen has reported on a concert night at the Fiket restaurant in Burgsvik in October, which turned into a wide-spread event.

All 30 people at the scene, including staff and live bands, were infected with corona. The only exception were two people who had already had covid-19. This weekend one of the participants passed away.

– He was popular and loved. It shows in such a small city, it’s a state of mind, says Bernt Nilsson, 81, who was at the concert.

“We came home after just over half an hour, and the only thing I touched was my light beer,” says Martin Skånberg, 74, who fell seriously ill with covid-19.

Organizers and participants have stated that the restaurant followed the current restrictions of a maximum of 50 people and a minimum of 1.5 meters between parties. Still, the infection spread like wildfire.

“It has not been considered in Sweden”

– It is obvious that the virus can travel longer distances than you think. There are also people who are asymptomatic and yet transmit many viruses. These super-spreaders are dangerous, says Annika Linde, a virologist and former state epidemiologist, and a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences think tank on coronavirus.

According to their report, there is evidence that the coronavirus can be spread through small droplets that remain in the air for a long time, especially in winter, when many people stay longer in poorly ventilated rooms.

Annika Linde believes that this is also confirmed by facts such as Gotland. He also believes that any sign that the virus is spreading such as an airborne infection or an aerosol infection is an argument for wearing mouth guards. To be effective, all parties must wear mouth guards.

– We have heard of over-propagation in many places before, but it has not been taken sufficiently into account in Sweden. Therefore, we study only this and come up with a strong recommendation on indoor mouth protection in closed rooms.

“Cynical” by the Swedish Public Health Agency

According to her, the risk of the so-called super spread increases in activities such as singing, sports and exertion, when breathing with difficulty and a lot. She thinks one should give up environments if possible, and wear mouth guards otherwise.

– Oral protection is not a miracle, but we must do everything possible. This is really worth considering now that we have such a terrible spread of the infection.

How do you see the Swedish Public Health Agency’s argument that many people get worse by keeping their distance with mouth guards?

– I think he’s a bit cynical. No one tries to minimize the importance of oral protection or hand washing in medical care. But in the population, there is just as bad evidence that hand washing is effective in preventing infections as oral protection tests. So you can reason the same around hand washing, that people become more careless if we encourage them to wash their hands, says Annika Linde.

Johan Giesecke, also a former state epidemiologist, has also thought about the phenomenon of super-spreaders.

– There is always talk that a person is a super spreader, but I increasingly believe that it is the environment that creates a breeding ground for him. Narrow rooms with low ceilings and poor ventilation can create a lot of dispersion, he says.
