cinderella story

Gianni Antetokounmpo’s career can be described as a kind of Cinderella story.

His parents left Lagos in Nigeria for Athens and Greece in 1991. But although Giannis, as he is often called, was born in Greece, he did not receive Greek citizenship until he was 18 years old. Since he also lacked Nigerian citizenship, until then he was stateless.

Since the family was paperless, living was difficult. In a 2013 interview with The New York Times, Giannis recounted how he and his older brother Thanasis as children worked with street vendors to contribute to the family income.

– Sometimes the refrigerator was empty. Some days we didn’t sell anything and then we didn’t have money for food.

Discovered at age 17

When Giannis was 17 years old, an NBA scout gave him a tip when he was playing for Filathlitikos in the Greek Second Division. A move that resulted in him being drafted by Milwakuee, and in October 2013, at the age of 18, he became one of the youngest debutants in the NBA.

“This is a great time for me and my family and I want to thank the Bucks (of Milwaukee) for believing in us. You took a chance with us eight years ago and now it feels unreal to put my name on a contract like this.” He said. Giannis in a statement Tuesday, according to ESPN.
