The highest death toll in Italy since the height of the war
Since the culmination of World War II in 1944, Italy had not seen as many deaths in the same year as the 2020 pandemic. That assessment is carried out by the country’s statistics authority, Istat.

– 2020 is not over yet, but a reasonable assessment is that we will exceed 700,000 deaths. This is a tragic figure that we have not seen in our country since 1944, says Istat CEO Gian Carlo Blangiardo in the broadcasts of the media company Rai.
1944 was the year the battles of World War II in Italy culminated.
Italy is one of the countries most affected by the covid pandemic. The number of deaths per million inhabitants is close to 1,100, which can be compared to the Swedish figure of around 750.
However, compared to the 1940s, the firecracker is required because since the population was smaller, the death rate was relatively much higher during the war. Italy today has a population of just over 60 million, while the number of Italians in the mid-1940s was around 45 million.
