Corona in Sweden: the vaccine can arrive earlier

To date, the United Kingdom, Bahrain, Canada, Singapore, Mexico, and the United States have approved the Pfizer / Biontech corona vaccine. But the message from the EU is delayed.

A review is underway at the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and a plan is expected to be published on December 29. The European Commission then decides on an approval.

Various media outlets are now reporting that the EMA has moved the meeting up to December 21. The new information means that the EU can give its approval on December 23, according to the Reuters news agency and German Bild.

– This is good news for the whole EU, says German Health Minister Jens Spahn to the newspaper.

You can start vaccinating during Christmas.

According to the information in Norwegian NRK, the first Norwegian can already be vaccinated on Christmas Eve. This would mean that Sweden also receives its doses before Christmas, as Norway, which is not a member of the EU, buys the vaccine through Sweden.

Sweden’s vaccine coordinator Richard Bergström doesn’t want to confirm the new date, but says the EMA is reviewing the schedule.

– we have always said latest December 29, says Bergström.

In Germany, the EU process around the vaccine has come under fire. Health Minister Jens Spahn has lobbied the EMA to approve the Pfizer / Biontech vaccine before Christmas.

The minister has previously noted that Biontech, which manufactures the vaccine together with US company Pfizer, is a German pharmaceutical company.

– As German Health Minister, it would be difficult to explain why other parts of the world are accessing a German-made vaccine faster than we are, he told Bild.
