The Swedish Academy on the law against MRI

The Nordic resistance movement and the Swedish Academy will meet in court. The academy sued NMR at the end of 2019, for having used the poems in a way contrary to so-called classical protection, reports Kulturnyheterna in SVT. This is the first time that classical protection has been tried in court in the 60 years that it has existed as part of copyright law.

The Swedish Academy filed a lawsuit against the Nordfront site and the neo-Nazi group Nordic Resistance Movement, NMR, because the site had used poems by Esaias Tegnér, Verner von Heidenstam, and Viktor Rydberg. Classical protection grants the Academy the right to report when works are used in a way that “violates the interests of spiritual cultivation.”

NMR believes that poets and authors have been cited in accordance with good practice and that the citations have not been distorted, so classical protection should not apply.

The parties will meet in court on March 10-12, 2021.
