The second corona wave has hit much harder than experts predicted, believes Stefan Löfven.
Now the Prime Minister is calling on the Swedish people to maintain the restrictions this Christmas.
– With the development we see in the rest of Europe, our disease rates, sadly also death rates, will increase, he says.
The Swedish Public Health Agency has been repeatedly criticized for failing to account for the increased spread of the infection during the fall. Prime Minister Stefan Löfven also believes that experts misjudged the power of the second wave.
– I think most of the people in the profession didn’t see such a wave in front of them, they talked about different clusters, he says.
He does not want to comment on his own responsibility and the possible responsibility of the government in the error of judgment before the end of the pandemic. However, he says that many countries in Europe made the same assessment.
Since Sweden is a bit behind the rest of Europe, we must prepare for more coronary heart disease in the future, says Löfven.

It will never be perfect
Aftonbladet interviews the prime minister in a video link Monday morning. He repeatedly says he has no intention of evaluating his actions or those of the government before the pandemic ends.
He also doesn’t want to answer whether he could have done something different.
– I want to wait for the big picture. Some conclusions have already been drawn about where we could have been better. Take care of the elderly, for example, where we need to do more and where we push for more in the next budget. We also carry out training initiatives.
So the situation of the elderly, who made visible by Ivo, It will not happen again?
– You can never end up in a situation where everything is perfect, I think most people understand. But you have to do everything you can based on the knowledge you have.
According to critics, the Swedish Public Health Agency has made several incorrect assessments, has this had a negative effect on the spread of the infection in Sweden?
– I want the pandemic to be almost over and for us to get the statement from the Crown Commission before commenting on it. We must also understand somewhere that the pandemic was completely unknown to everyone, so it is not always so easy to make the safest assessments.

The pandemic has hit many older people hard.
The light in the tunnel
When will we see the end of the pandemic?
– Vaccination is the light in the tunnel. But we don’t know how long it will be before such a large part of the population is vaccinated for us to really see the difference. We can probably count on having to live a different everyday life for quite a while next year.
Medical care is strained: how should it work over Christmas weekend?
– The regions and hospitals must decide that. We all understand that it is very hard and we must have a close dialogue between the government, the regions, the National Board of Health and Welfare and the Public Health Agency so that we can organize ourselves and add resources.
What do you want to say to all the struggling healthcare professionals and the patients who are not allowed to have surgery due to the tense situation?
– For the staff, of course, it is a continuous admiration and respect for the work they do. We want them to have the best possible conditions to continue. In terms of operations, we know that we will need to add more resources after the pandemic to be able to service the care debt.
The interview with the Prime Minister was conducted on a video link Monday morning.
“Everyone has a responsibility”
What is the government’s responsibility to make health care work?
– We all have a responsibility, it is not the case that the regions can do the best they want. Our duty is to ensure that the citizens of our country receive the care they need when they need it.
Have the government and the state done enough?
– There will come a time when everything will be tested, when the crown commission gives its image. However, I can say that it would be strange if the evaluation came to the conclusion that everything went exactly as on rails, a year ago we did not know what covid-19 was.
Message to the Swedish people
What is your message to the Swedish people before Christmas?
– I want to thank you for so many people who have been involved and have followed the current advice and recommendations. Most people have taken it seriously and stood up for their fellow men. I ask all of you to persevere a little longer and we will get through it together.
How are you going to celebrate Christmas?
– I plan to celebrate a different Christmas. For security reasons, I don’t pretend to tell you where it should be. But I will celebrate it with Ulla in such a way that we follow the advice and recommendations.
