The nickname has been around for 105 years. The fact that it is now removed comes after years of criticism from, among others, American Indian groups for being racist.
“There are a reliable number of people in this community who are upset by our name and hurt by our name, and there is no reason for our club to carry a divisive name,” club owner Paul Dolan told MLB.com.
Who doesn’t like the name change is the president of the United States, Donald Trump.
“Oh no! What’s going on? This is not good news, not even for ‘Indians’,” he writes in Twitter.
The MLB team previously stated in a statement that they would speak with representatives of the affected groups about how best to move forward.
“The recent unrest in our society and in our country has only strengthened our need to improve as an organization when it comes to issues of social injustice,” the club wrote earlier this year.
“Indians” will remain a name until a new name is chosen and various trademark issues have been resolved. The change will take place no earlier than 2022.
The NFL team Washington previously decided to drop the Redskins nickname.
