When the new restrictions came in the fall, the Onsala Pirates basketball club decided to do the same thing as last spring: They paused all training activities until further notice.
Basketball is an indoor sport and the club considered that it would be wrong to continue training as usual. Instead, in recent weeks, other opportunities have been created to meet and train.
It started with a tip hike with a two kilometer loop in the woods. To keep the association’s children training, videos have been recorded with tips on exercises that can be done at home without a basketball hoop.
– They can be done both indoors and outdoors. It depends on how patient the parents have, says President Martin Wendelbo.
The club has also reserved Tingvalla IP for individual outdoor training.
– It is cold and raining but we say that what does not kill hardens, says Martín Wendelbo.
To keep the interest in their sport alive at Kungsbacka, although training as usual is not possible, the club bought almost 300 basketballs. They were then distributed to eight different locations in Kungsbacka Township.
– It was a huge success. Not everyone has a basketball and it feels important that we can invest in something that makes people not forget about basketball. Joy is very important, says Martin Wendelbo.

Closed this spring
When the club closed its operations in the spring, it was whispered in some places that training was stopped. This time the tone is more positive among the members.
– Now that we have found creative solutions, it has been very well received. People call and text to tell us that the things we do are good.
The next part of the job to keep interest in basketball alive is a Christmas calendar where part of the club’s history is told every day.
– We are active and we try to find new creative solutions to get there, says Martin Wendelbo.
