After nine months of crown restrictions, the European Parliament is back in Strasbourg, albeit in a very small format.

President David Sassoli is in the French border city on Monday to open this week’s session, although most members attend via the web or from Brussels.

During the year, France has strongly criticized the European Parliament’s unwillingness to hold sessions in Strasbourg and has lobbied for Sassoli to convene its members there. Among other things, regional authorities have questioned why the European Parliament is considering spending € 500 million to renovate its session room in Brussels, instead of using the room in Strasbourg. In an attempt to defuse criticism, Sassoli will meet on Monday with the mayor of Strasbourg, Jeanne Barseghian, and the French EU minister, Clément Beaune.
