If the municipal administrations choose non-environmentally friendly means of transport, they pay an internal fee. Now it is increasing significantly, all to get rid of air travel and private car driving.

By making travel by non-environmentally friendly means of transport more expensive, all municipal activities will have an economic reason to change and become climate neutral, according to a system introduced in 2016.
These are not large sums. After the increases, it is estimated that approximately 450,000 SEK will be transferred to a climate fund, where it can be used for various projects. The education administration is responsible for most of the payments.
– Basically, administrations can request money for various projects. Some, for example, have been used to allow preschools to buy box bikes, says Camilla Neptune (left), chair of the city council’s health and environment committee.
Therefore, the rate is completely internal. If, for example, the school administration spends SEK 5,000 on a flight, it must, if the public official’s proposal is adopted by the municipal board, additionally pay an additional 50 percent to the climate fund.
– The money stays like this in the municipality. But this is a small part of the tuning work. Hopefully it won’t be necessary in x number of years, as we all drive without fossils in the township, says Camilla Neptune.
Since 2016, the municipality’s vehicle emissions have decreased by 48 percent. The share of fossil-free fuels has increased from 64 to 91 percent.
The emissions that remain come mainly from trips made by municipal employees in private cars and from air travel.
