A man opened fire in front of the great Cathedral of St. John the Divine in northwest Manhattan in New York on Sunday night Swedish time.
A choir had just finished its performance in the church. Only a dozen bystanders remained when the man began shooting, the Reuters news agency reports.
Reuters photos show he had a gun in each hand. He also fired at the police, but it is believed that no police or bystanders were injured.
Police responded to the fire and the man was taken to hospital in critical condition. He later died from his injuries.
